How to Get a Level 7 in IB Biology

How do I learn IB Biology for HL? To get you up to Level 7 in SL/HL Biology, use these hints.

Learning new material:

  1. Create fine notes. Because of the amount of content required for the IB Biology Test, it is crucial that any material that may come up is a go-to source. For each subject, I made thorough notes from the textbook and the syllabus and then condensed them into flashcards. Making your own notes is the best way to do this, whether handwritten or typed. However, you can use mine if you don't have the time to make your own notes: here.

  2. Students should prepare hard for their exam. IB biology SL/HL Exam preparation courses.

  3. For vocabulary and main words, make flashcards. IB Biology is high on content, and you need to read and be able to describe several words. A perfect way to consolidate this information is to make flashcards and it is easy to revisit them later on. In an app such as Quizlet or StudyBlue, these flashcards may either be traditional paper flashcards or wireless. For all IB Biology subjects, I have made flashcards. To test your skills, I have found this questionnaire.

  4. For the different procedures, create mind maps, flowcharts and draw diagrams. In IB Biology, introducing data in a manner that you can appreciate is the best way to learn.

    • Mind maps are outstanding for

    • For any method with specified phases or a series of events, flowcharts are ideal. Examples include: DNA Replication, DNA Translation, PCR Stages, Electron Transport Chains, DNA Transcription, etc.

    • Arguably, making diagrams is the most successful way to learn biology. It is possible to reduce much of the material contained in the course down to a diagram.

Revision techniques:

  • Using a whiteboard with questions on 'draw'. There are about 30 separate 'draw' syllabus points that you might be asked about by the examiners and these are easy to pick up marks. There is no need for any artistic expertise and you could achieve somewhere between 2 and 6 marks by learning how to draw an animal cell or the carbon cycle. I have made a list of all the things (with diagrams) you need to be able to draw here.

  • If you fail to recall the names of different compounds, cells or systems, try to break down the origins of abstract terms. For instance:

Hydrolysis: water + splitting

  • Before attending the next one, make sure that you grasp the details from the previous class. The details will collect and soon enough there will be so much to remember, you will have to teach yourself the fresh knowledge efficiently, which takes a lot of time and effort. The answer is the word 'comprehend' here. If you do not apply them to a topic in the test, there is no point in being able to memorise the facts.

From time to time, look through your notes. Skim through your notes anytime you have a spare moment, to get them as familiar to you as possible. For example, if you eat breakfast together, instead of focusing on your social network, spread your notes out in front of you. This will solve the forgetting curve:
